MAC DIDN’T SLEEP LONG, and he woke up and stared at Callen and Kai, asleep on either side of him. Callen’s hand had slipped off his arm, but it was still on the bed. Kai was twisted so she could sleep and continue to touch him, and he tenderly used his other hand to touch her arm. Why had she come and stayed here? He’d lied to her. He’d lied to them all.

He cared for her. He’d known that all along, but for some reason it felt possible now. She knew his identity. She knew his age. He wasn’t twenty years older than she was. But now he was the man who’d pretended to be someone he wasn’t. And he might continue to be that man, meaning he’d once again be too old for him.

No. A woman was not part of his future. His woman was St. Ninian, the island he loved, the island that needed him. That had to be enough. And Kai needed a man, someone to love her, someone to help raise Dom. Maybe someone on the island could take that role. Levi? Jacob? Mac didn’t know, but she shouldn’t be alone. She had too many smiles, too much compassion, not to share that with someone.

Every thought that flew into his head for the next couple hours was melancholy and dark. At least the wraith vanished when he was awake. Rick hadn’t gone. If anything, he’d brought guests, and Mac didn’t know what to do about that. He might have to see Weston and ask for help, for prayer. Maybe Traci, the counselor. Or Ione, the newer counselor, although he thought Traci might be right for this issue. Ione would want his story, and he didn’t want to tell it.

Running his hand over his face, he wondered how long it would take to grow back his beard. He needed it. Contacts, beard, white streaks of hair. His nose had been reconstructed after the accident, and his voice would never be the same, so those things he didn’t have to worry about. But without the beard, someone might figure it out. An eleven-year-old had figured it out. Maybe twelve. Still...

But she’d had a photo. Nobody else had a photo except Huck.

Huck would know. Huck would be hurt. Angry? Mac didn’t know. But he didn’t want to find out.

Kai woke up first, and she smiled at him. That smile kicked his feet out from under him. She was sweet. She loved her son. She didn’t need to be here with him.

“You left Dom?”

She laughed. “Dom is sixteen. Ben’s family is watching him. He’ll be fine. Either he and Tacy will make peace, or we’ll have full blown hatred when we get home, but I’m willing to risk it. I think it will be okay.”

“It will be fine,” Mac said. “She didn’t mean to be difficult. She sees the worst outcomes and tries to avoid those. So Dom wasn’t a boy who needed love. He was someone who might corrupt her children or assault a little girl.
